Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a frequently performed cosmetic surgery. Genetics, pregnancies and resulting stretch marks, fat deposits and dramatic weight loss are all contributing factors to the development of loose skin in the abdominal region. Inspite of proper diet and exercise, loose skin can make the abdomen appear out of proportion with the rest of the body.

A full tummy tuck involves removing loose skin, fat deposits, and stretch marks from the abdominal region. Vertical abdominal muscles that have been stretched and weakened over time can be tightened, restoring the appearance of a firmer, flatter abdomen. Tummy tuck procedures can be performed alone or with liposuction to further improve body contours. A tummy tuck should not be considered as a treatment for obesity, or a substitute for proper diet and exercise. Individuals considering a tummy tuck should be healthy and relatively fit. Be aware that future pregnancies and substantial changes in weight following a tummy tuck, as well as the presence of scars from prior surgeries, may decrease the effectiveness and longevity of treatment.

How is Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

Tummy tuck surgery can take between two and five hours to complete under general anaesthesia. Prior to surgery, your doctor will mark the site for incisions and for liposuction, if necessary.

The surgeon will make two incisions, one horizontal incision above the pubic line and the other in the bikini line. Abdominal muscles are tightened with sutures and the skin is re-positioned and the incision is closed. The umbilicus is remodelled and may be relocated.

What should I expect coming out of Tummy Tuck Surgery?

After the surgery, you will remain in the hospital for twenty-four hours under observation. Small drain tubes may be inserted within the abdominal tissues to drain excess fluid. Dressings will be applied to the abdomen and covered with tape or an elastic bandage.

What should I expect in my recovery period?

The week following surgery you will find it difficult to stand up straight. This is normal for your incisions to heal properly. The trauma of surgery may also cause a feeling of weakness in the abdominal muscles during the recovery period over the next three weeks. You may need to wear compression garments for up to six weeks. You will need to start walking around within 12 to 18 hours of surgery. Any discomfort will be controlled by medication. And the sutures will be removed in about seven days.

What should I expect for my long term outcome?

Results are generally excellent but a healthy diet and lifestyle are essential to maintain these results.
