Hair Transplant Surgery

As a result of modern operation techniques, hair transplantation has become a successful treatment method for both men and women. Hair transplantation can be performed in every age group. Certain factors need to be taken into consideration. For example, hair density, scalp elasticity, hair loss type, hair colour, curly or straight. Your doctor will decide which technique is correct for you during your consultation. If you are a suitable candidate for a hair transplantation, it is our responsibility and we will endeavour to give you the most natural look. There will be no difference between your own hair and the transplanted hair, which will be healthy and natural.

We use the FUE technique, where hair follicles are obtained one by one using special equipment, which allows the extraction of body hairs to be transplanted to the scalp. The advantage of this technique is that it does not leave any scars in the area of extraction. The disadvantage is that it requires much more time than the FUT technique to obtain the same number of grafts.

Thanks to the method we use, we can obtain hair follicles from many parts of the body. When this method is combined with the standard transplantation techniques, there is an important increase in the number of potential donor regions in the body. The possibility of extracting hair follicles from other body parts increases the number of follicles that can be used in the operation.

How is Hair Transplant Surgery Performed?

A mutliple step process is used to extract the follicular units. To begin with, a small sharp punch scores the skin around the follicular unit. This is followed by a small dull punch to penetrate the soft tissue surrounding the follicular unit. This process is refered to as "blunt dissection".

Once separated from the surrounding tissue, the follicular unit can then be extracted with the use of forceps gripping the hair above the surface.

After the follicle is extracted, the small hole remaining will contract and heal over the next few days, leaving tiny round scars, not detectable to the naked eye once the patient's hair grows out.

What should I expect coming out of Hair Transplant Surgery?

Some discomfort may be felt in both the areas where hair was taken from and in the area of transplant, during the first few days following surgery. Mild headache, swelling and bruising around the eyes often occurs. Immediately after surgery bandages will probably be applied and should remain over night. Medical staff usually shampoo the hair for the first time after surgery and your surgeon will give you grooming instructions fort he duration of your recovery. There may be some scabbing in both areas but these should disappear within eight to ten days. There may also be some numbness but this will gradually fade.

What should I expect in my recovery period?

Excluding vigorous activities, most patients are able to return to their routine the day after surgery. On the second or third day, the hair from the graft will begin to fall out and hair re-growth may be thin for the first few months. This is a normal reaction caused by diminished blood supply that occurs during the procedure. New hair will begin to grow in the grafts within three months of the surgery. If required the procedure could be repeated to fill any spaces which might occur, or to give a thicker head of hair.

What should I expect for my long term outcome?

As the grafts have been taken from areas where hair is strong and healthy, the transplanted hair should continue to grow throughout an individual's lifetime. It is natural for some grafts not to hold but on the whole most patients are pleased with the results of their hair transplant.
